I might give it a listen. I really liked the last album but the previous one I wasn't too keen on.

I agree, "And The Glass Handed Kites" was definitely their best one. Frengers has some amazing songs (I could still die for "Comforting Sounds"), but the album as a whole isn't as brilliant as "And The Glass..."

I think we shouldn't expect too much... I mean.. do you know "A Triumph For Man", their second album? It is kind of weird  Okay, some good songs, but you can't compare it with their next 2 albums.

I think we can go on discussing here about Mew, Hester ;)

Why were you surprised when you saw Mew live? I wasn't surprised, it was as amazing as I had hoped and imagined it to be *sigh*

I saw them 3rd May 2006... *sigh*
http://www.poptillyoudrop.ch/bands/mew/concerts.htm

And I prefer "And the glass..." I think the album as a whole is better than Frengers, although my all-time-favourite song "comforting sounds" is on Frengers.

Actually both albums are fantastic.. whenever I listen to "A triumph for man" I'm surprised how "bad" Mew used to be before Frengers :o Hmm, actually some of the songs would have been quite good on "A triumph for man", too, but the whole record is really crappy produced.

I'm downloading the complete discograpy now, including some rare ones. :D

When I saw them live they were a lot louder/more bombastic then I expected. That really surprised me, in a good way. :)

I liked them from the point on when I heard "Comforting Sounds" for the first time. That might have been in 2004, too. I got to know them because some guys I know had a gig with them in Denmark and they told me that they had played with one of the best bands on earth, so I had a listen.. and, yes, they blew me away :)

Yesterday I saw them open for NIN. A rather strange combination, but the singer told us, that Trent himself asked them to join them on the european part of the tour. Apparantly doesn't mind weird combinations then.
The audience was really less happy about the choice. Talking troughout, as if Mew wasn;t even there, staring and not really paying attention. They were bored, and they really didn't have a reason to be.

But damn, was it loud! Mainly the rythm section was very massive. The bass droned away and the drums just were crushingly heavy, with a reverb effect on them. I must say, the guitars were a bit thin. They are never that heavy on the album (I'm mainly Glass Handed Kites fan), but I guess it was a bit of a big contrast with the low end bass and drums.
The singing was very good in the mix and overall it was a clear sound, especially since it was so loud.

As songs go, I didn't recognize everything. I never was a Frengers fan, and I probably never will be. I will give it a new try though, but most of those songs have way less dynamics in vocals, staying on the high end. Luckily for me, there was a lot of Kites (set only was 30 mins :( ) and it was great. An obvious highlight in The Zookeeper's boy, wich was so fuckin beatiful.

As far as new songs go, I cant really tell, cause I don't know Frengers that well and not all their Ep's either. But there's this new EP out called No More Stories EP and I'm almost sure they played Introducing Palace Players. Not an easy song to listen to (difficult beat), but it is kinda funky.

Makes me curious for the album. I guess its going to have a focus on rytm section and be pretty loud, but also be a bit strange. We'll see.

I saw them at Lowlands a few years ago. They were quite bombastic as well. I like them live better then on the albums.

They've added a few european tourdates. For example, 11 Nov 2009, Melkweg Amsterdam.
Don't miss that, dutchies!!!!
I want to see them, too :(

hmm shit, besides my vacation, I really dont think I have money for such things. I havent bought a cd in 2 months even, besides 1 backorder. :(

Well, I heard a perfect rip of the album today, and I wasn't that disappointed.
Normally Rich Costey is an awful producer, who ruined alot of ok albums of bands I like, by producing the crap out of them. Now I must say, he's the perfect fit for Mew I guess.
Live they have this wall of sound, with lots of things going on, drums loud as hell and lots of echo and effect on the vocals. Costey understood thatand went with it. The drums ar even louder then EVER..

Thematically this album is alot lighter, dare I say happier then Glass Handed Kites, wich I pitty a bit. I liked the heavy guitars and mysterious atmosphere there, with the dark lyrics surrounding it.
It does not mean that it's less complex, cause hyper guitars and weird time/song structures are still all around.

On the instrumental side, there's alot more use on piano and synth. It gives the album a dreamlike and light sound. The guitars make up for that, cause they are hyper, not stuck on any patern and sometimes verging on noiserock/Shoegaze. Though I must say, the shoegaze element is less present and more lightly present then on Kites, here its more math rock.
As I mentioned earlier the drums are LOUD. A trademark Mew thing and its good to see that being used in full advantage on this production. They often don't do more then pound away with heavy bassdrum, wich is on the forefront alot, but its still a very important part of the music I guess.

Highlights: Repeaterbeater, Cartoons And Macrame Wounds, Hawai, Reprise. heavy drums
downside: the lighter tone, less heavy guitars.

I don't think this album is happier than "Glass Handed Kites". "Beach" may be an exception - this song seems really light.. and it's not one of my favourites. I also rather like the gloomy Mew.
The two first songs and the Reprise in the end give a great frame to the whole album. Although "Introducing Palace Players" would go better to the begining than "New Terrain".

"Cartoons and Macrame Wounds" is one of the most brilliant song on this wonderful album!
