Butterflies and Hurricanes

Lyrics

Change everything you are
And everything you were
Your number has been called

Fights and battles have begun
Revenge will surely come
Your hard times are ahead

Best, you've got to be the best
You've got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
Your time is now

Change everything you are
And everything you were
Your number has been called

Fights and battles have begun
Revenge will surely come
Your hard times are ahead

Best, you've got to be the best
You've got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
Your time is now

Donít let your self down
And donít let yourself go
Your last chance has arrived

Best, you've got to be the best
You've got to change the world
And use this chance to be heard
Your time is now

Meaning

Lorenz tried to predict the weather with all kinds of predictions and calculations and he succeeded. But he could only predic the weather, and only one day ahead, for (and here it comes) if a butterfly chances to flap his wings in Beijing in March, then, by August, hurricane patterns in the Atlantic will be completely different. Thatís an old saying from meteorologists, itís also not something Iím making up or whatever.

The idea is that you canít predict the future weather longer then a day or so (we can now do a few days), because it because so sketchy and the slightest thing could throw the entire thing off (The butterfly that effects the hurrican). So no, in contrast to the "chaos theory" which talks about a downwards spiral, this is something completely different.

The song talks about changes (as a metaphor the slightest butterflywingflap changes everything in future weather even hurricanes) . Change the world and etc also point into that direction.

Although the MUSIC itself may resemble the battle between a rock band and a classical orchestra. My theory is most plausible on why they selected the Title. Matt is a well educated man, he reads alot. Surely he read about the butterfly effect too, but decided to use it in the terms of Butterflies and Hurricanes, which although at first sight have nothing in common, the old 1960 saying says that they influence each other totally. And thatís where the change lies too. Butterflies are symbol for soft and gentle and Hurricanes for hard and loud, itís no wonder he used them and no by coincedence either. He uses the meteorologist metaphor along with a subliminal metaphor that already lingers in the back of our heads ever since we grew up.

Chris: "We weren't sure whether to play that at first [for the tour with The Cure in the US, 2004] because it is one of the most experimental tracks on Absolution, but it is also out favourite track on Absolution. We actually recorded strings on there. It is one of the ones we do that has a strange arrangement. It is not really a conventional song as such. We were unsure of doing it but we decided at the first gig that maybe it was another side of the band that would be good to show people who are seeing us for the first gig. The reaction we got from the first gig was really surprising. The crowd seemed excited that we were playing that one song. We have played it at every gig so far on this tour. I'm not sure if we will keep playing it. We are trying to mix it up. At the moment that one song is going down really well".
