Stockholm Syndrome

Lyrics

I wont stand in your way
Let your hatred grow
And she'll scream and she'll shout and she'll pray
And she had a name yeah she had a name
And i wont hold you back
Let your anger rise
And we'll fly and we'll fall and we'll burn
No one will recall
No one will recall

This is the last time i'll abandon you
And this is the last time i'll forget you
I wish i could

Look to the stars
Let hope burn in your eyes
And we'll love and we'll hope and we'll die
All to no avail
All to no avail

This is the last time i'll abandon you
And this is the last time ill forget you
I wish i could

This is the last time i'll abandon you
And this is the last time i'll forget you
I wish i could
I wish i could

Chris: "Ever since we have been touring Absolution we have been ending on that song pretty much every gig. It is just a blistering rock track. Wherever you are in the arena it just has this catchy kind of rock riffs that even if you don't like it, it just turns heads".

"The Stockholm Syndrome was originally developed to explain the phenomenon of hostages bonding with their captors. The name refers to a bank holdup in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973 when four people were held hostage for six days by two men. The hostages and their captors bonded with each other and the hostages actually came to see their captors as protecting them from the police. One was even reported as later becoming engaged to one of the captors.

Subsequent research found that such a reaction had occurred in all the "hostage" groups studied, including cult members, battered women, incest victims and physically or emotionally abused children. Researchers have concluded that this seems to be a universal phenomenon which may be instinctive and thus play a survival function for hostages who are victims of abuse.

There is no universally accepted definition of the Stockholm Syndrome but it has been suggested that it is present if one or more of the following is observed:

  • Positive feelings by the captive towards his/her captor.
  • Negative feelings by the captive toward the police or authorities trying to win his/her release.
  • Positive feelings by the captor towards his/her captive"

The famous "new riff" they played after Hyper Music at Reading 2002 is the riff of Stockholm Syndrome.

Official video

Background: “The Stockholm Syndrome was originally developed to explain the phenomenon of hostages bonding with their captors. The name refers to a bank holdup in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973 when four people were held hostage for six days by two men. The hostages and their captors bonded with each other and the hostages actually came to see their captors as protecting them from the police. One was even reported as later becoming engaged to one of the captors.”

This explains the 'captor' scene right at the start of the video.

There is a reoccurring theme where Matt writes words on himself or where text appears on screen, as if asking for help.

In the midway through the video, a moving text spells out “PRISONER”.

Aside from the writing, the video also shows random violent scenes where people appear to be being beaten or hit, and scenes where bodies are seen curled up and trying to hide.

Maybe Muse are the captors in this video. All the images in the video are infrared. Another low budget video.

paz: i just downloaded this from you because i heard it at leeds on sunday and it was fuckin´ boss they also did another jam a bit like ´in your world´ but a bit more rage let me no if anyone downloaded the gig pazman111@hotmail.com
minime: ^ What else did they play at leeds? I downloaded newone3 from this site, Its wow, has a totally different tone/emotion+style to any other muse song iv´e ever heard. is this what matt means when he says ´abba´ sounding songs? There´s a song by abba called ´fernando´(I admit I really like that one) or something thats the closest comparison I can make to muse. I don´t see them going down the path of ´mama mia, here i go again........that might be disasterous.
jayjay: cool song, can definitely see em reworking the format/structure of the song for the new album tho (but thats nothin new!) Really like the chorus, quite happy, and the groovy bassline makes me nod my head good ;)
jayjay: Just for the pointless silly record and me beign annyoing im pretty sure the bridge is not :-And I just dont care if you thrill but is ´and i just dont care if its real´
jayjay: ooh i listened to it a bit more i think the start of the second verse is :-Chase the dreams hes made / theres needles in the hayand the chorus is :-No it doesnt change / And you cant resist / making me feel eternally blessed
tompie wompie: reminds me a bit of darkshines.quite the same verse as it and also same climax(solo):-)cool song.made me cry...
Doddy: Yeah they played this at leeds, along with an intrumental track. Both pretty cool, played them on his new shiny geetar 2, very cool.
Rebecca: I love this song. I think these new songs are just getting better and better and i love it. I especially love the beginning of the song and the guitar part. It´s beautiful. It was brilliant when they played it at Leeds too and thanks to this site, i was able to sing along when they played it and i got some strange looks from people, either because i knew the words or because of my singing! Anyway, just wanted to say that this song rules and i can´t wait for the new album.Oh and also, i agree with jayjay about the lyrics. I´ve been trying to figure it out too and you sound about right!! And i think the very first line could be ´Chase the dreams away, there´s needles in the hay´Thanks.
plop: brilliant song. did anyone else only get 1 min 30 seconds when they downloaded this or is it just my shit computer?
Beckeh: To me it sounds like ´God´s needles in the hay´ but that doesnt really make sense anyway or ´Those needles in the hay´ or ´these needles in the hay´.Ohh its so confusing.
Beckeh: And (to me) ´No exhausted shares´ sounds like ´No it doesn´t change´
gurl: you can download this song at www.microcuts.net
muse_maniac: do u think he says ´ making me feel as though i am dead´?
iammattsguitar: na ..ithink its making me feel eternally blessedlove that solo, prob most only improv tho
